The Opportunity

Join us at the University of the Sunshine Coast as the Senior Lead, Data Governance, under the visionary guidance of our Chief Data Officer. In this significant role, you'll oversee the delivery of university-wide data governance, privacy and records services. As part of our Insights and Analytics Unit, you'll have the exciting opportunity to leverage the strategic value of our data assets while supporting a culture of responsible and ethical use of data and artificial intelligence.

In this high-profile role, you will engage widely and traverse the breadth of our organisation across learning and teaching, research and corporate services. Your responsibilities will include promoting best practices in data governance and a range of associated functions, including privacy and data protection compliance, data management, records and digitisation to advance our institution forward in the digital era. You will

  • take the lead in implementing a modern and fit for purpose data governance practice across our university, benchmarked with industry and best practice approaches;
  • implement a program to raise awareness and understanding of data governance, responsible use of artificial intelligence, privacy and records;
  • provide expert guidance on data governance, privacy and records compliance, supporting evidence-based decision making and capability uplift across the university; and
  • lead and coach a skilled team of data governance professionals, and as a core member of the Insights and Analytics Unit Leadership Team.

About you
Our ideal candidate is someone who leads by example, fostering a culture of respect and responsibility towards data management. You'll be the go-to person for ensuring we stay on top of data governance practices and policies, providing expert guidance every step of the way. Collaboration is a strength, as you work closely with peers to fortify our data management approach and mitigate risks. You'll be a trusted advisor, offering timely support and insights to various stakeholders. As a key player in shaping our Data and Analytics Strategy, you'll bring valuable perspective and direction, guiding our team towards continuous improvement and success.

You will possess:

  • Strong leadership skills, capable of leading change and fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, skilled at negotiation and cooperation across diverse teams.
  • An ability to identify and solve complex problems and resourcefulness to positively engage with stakeholders to meet expectations.
  • Highly organised with the ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently, manage workload and meet deadlines.
  • Strong experience and understanding in contemporary data governance practices, including privacy and records.
  • Good knowledge of compliance requirements under relevant legislative frameworks in the higher education sector or similar.
