The Opportunity

Join UniSC and play a key role in supporting hands-on science education! As a technician, you'll collaborate with academic staff to prepare teaching materials and laboratories, ensuring seamless delivery of practical, lab-based courses in animal and environmental sciences. From setting up and maintaining lab equipment to developing new techniques and ensuring WH&S compliance, you'll be instrumental in creating an engaging and well-resourced learning environment. You will

  • provide technical support and expertise to a range of undergraduate laboratory-based teaching programs including animal and environmental-focused courses in order to facilitate a quality practical experience and ensure students’ successful completion of all learning objectives and outcomes;
  • Contribute to method development and problem solving of standard procedures, assisting in the development and implementation of new techniques within the teaching laboratories; and
  • Contribute to the safe working practices within the teaching laboratories and auxiliary facilities, including compliance with risk and waste management systems, and the routine maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment.

You are an excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills, able to engage effectively with diverse individuals while fostering a positive work environment. Your exceptional organisational and time management abilities allow you to navigate conflicting demands in a fast-paced, client-focused academic setting. Adaptable and detail-oriented, you thrive in dynamic environments, ensuring efficiency and seamless operations.

You will possess:

  • Completion of a relevant degree or a combination of relevant experience and education/training may also be considered;
  • Previous work experience in providing a broad range of technical support in animal and environmental sciences, teaching and/or research activities, including preparing reagents and solutions, operating standard laboratory equipment and conducting routine laboratory tests and procedures in a relevant discipline;
  • Working knowledge of and the ability to follow and comply with work instructions, policies, guidelines and legislation relevant to laboratory technical services including work health and safety requirements, practical experience with different laboratory waste streams, and risk management/assessment procedures;
  • Sound analytical and problem-solving skills relevant to general teaching laboratory support including the ability to analyse results of experimental trail runs, conduct quality checks on methods and investigate experimental protocols that do not give the anticipated results; and
  • A current class ‘C’ Drivers Licence.
