The Opportunity

Join our team as a Technical Leader, where you'll provide vital support and scientific expertise for the day-to-day operations of the Moreton Bay research facilities. You'll ensure infrastructure, equipment, and facilities are fully functional, while also ensuring that lab users are well-trained and competent. Collaborate with the Team Leader and Senior Technical Officer to develop procedures, work practices, and learning materials that empower UniSC research across campuses. Please note, this role requires occasional travel to other UniSC campuses to provide operational support and training, so flexibility is a must.

You will

  • provide technical leadership, specialist support and expertise to laboratory users for the successful operation, coordination, and administration of the Moreton Bay research facilities;
  • collaborate with the Team Leader and Senior Technical Officer (Research; Sippy Downs) to promote and maintain compliance with legislation, regulations and Australian Laboratory Standards covering health and safety, good laboratory practice and the risk management framework to ensure successful research outcomes; and
  • induct and train laboratory users in PC2 work practices, specialist equipment and advanced instrumentation including but not limited to microscopes, microbiological and molecular equipment in the research facilities.

About you

You possess strong interpersonal skills, allowing you to communicate effectively in writing, verbally, and through active listening. You excel both as a team member and independently, showing initiative in adapting to change and handling new situations. In a high-volume work environment, you manage clients, staff, and personnel efficiently, even under minimal supervision. Your experience managing facilities with complex functions and resources enables you to balance competing demands effectively. With a commitment to high service standards in research, clinical, or teaching labs, you’re skilled in training personnel and monitoring performance. Additionally, your strong analytical and independent critical thinking skills, especially in a PC2 environment, further enhance your ability to contribute meaningfully to laboratory activities.

You will possess:

  • Completion of a relevant degree with at least four years subsequent relevant experience, or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training previous work experience in a research, clinical or teaching laboratory environment;
  • Proven knowledge and expertise in microscopy, microbiology, molecular biology, tissue culture and biotechnology;
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining chemical safety in a laboratory environment, including an understanding of safe disposal, dangerous goods classes, Scheduled Medicines and Poisons, and Chemicals of Security Concern; 
  • Comprehensive knowledge Risk Group 2 containment and the ability to administer, develop and implement guidelines, legislation and regulations relevant to laboratory technical operations including health and safety, Australian Standards and principles of good laboratory practice;
  • A comprehensive understanding of Biosafety (OGTR) and Biosecurity regulations and relevant Australian laboratory standards is required, as is previous experience in risk management in a laboratory environment; and
  • Current Queensland Driver’s Licence.
