The Opportunity

You will play a pivotal role in advancing teaching, research, and engagement in epidemiology and biostatistics within the Public Health Discipline and School of Health. In this role, you’ll design and deliver engaging teaching in specialised public health areas, supervise research students, and pursue research aligned with the School’s priorities, including health equity, health promotion, disease prevention, and the socio-ecological determinants of health and wellbeing. You will collaborate across disciplines and build strong partnerships with industry, government, and community organisations, creating meaningful impacts for students, the community, and UniSC.

You will:

  • Deliver high-quality, engaging teaching, develop curricula, and provide fair and constructive assessment to support student success;
  • Conduct research in your discipline, develop a clear research agenda, and contribute to publications, grants, and supervision of higher-degree students;
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, building partnerships that advance learning, research, and community impact;
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and ethical academic environment that promotes collaboration, professional growth, and high standards; and
  • Participate in academic development, professional activities, and other duties as required to support the evolving teaching, research, and engagement priorities of the University.

About you:

Our candidate will possess strong subject matter expertise, pedagogical expertise, excellent communication skills, a passion for teaching and learning, a student-centered approach, and a commitment to innovative and engaging teaching methods.

This includes a deep understanding of pedagogical principles and instructional strategies, including implementing effective teaching methods to enhance student learning outcomes. You will create a conducive learning environment, maintaining discipline and fostering a positive atmosphere for learning. Assessment and feedback; designing fair and relevant assessments to evaluate student progress and areas for improvement. Adaptability and flexibility; adapt to diverse learning needs and situations, adjusting the teaching approach based on student feedback and emerging educational trends. Continuous professional development, a commitment to own professional growth and development, actively seeking opportunities to expand knowledge, attend workshops, conferences, and engage in research to stay current.

You will possess:

  • Completion or near-completion of a doctoral qualification in a relevant public health field or equivalent accreditation and standing;
  • Effectiveness as a teacher, which is evidenced by:
    • student feedback on teaching using valid instrument/s, peer review and/or student outcomes, and
    • the capacity to conceive, develop and deliver higher education curricula and contribute to relevant areas of teaching.
  • Evidence of research experience, including for example, refereed publications; participation in research teams; co-supervision of candidates for honours and higher degrees by research;
  • Membership of and sound connections with relevant professional bodies and community groups and/or in professional practice;
  • Strong personal qualities and collegial approaches that contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment which is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement for both staff and students; and
  • Evidence of participation in academic development activities and the desire to continue to learn and improve as an effective academic.

Desirable

  • Experience undertaking academic administrative functions, e.g. course coordination, within a University.
  • Professional experience as an epidemiologist.
