The Opportunity

You will play a pivotal role supporting students undertaking professional placements in accredited pathology laboratories. In this role, you will coordinate and oversee all professional placement courses within the Medical Laboratory Science program, ensuring students gain high-quality, compliant, and meaningful workplace learning experiences.

Working closely with Medical Laboratory Scientists and pathology providers across both the public and private sectors, you will actively build and strengthen industry partnerships on the Sunshine Coast and beyond. Through these collaborations, you will identify, develop, and expand professional practice opportunities for students in the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Pathology), helping to grow placement capacity and enhance graduate employability.

Please note, the role is based at UniSC’s Sunshine Coast campus in Sippy Downs and may require travel to other locations as needed.

You will:

  • Source, allocate, oversee, and assess Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Pathology) students in accredited pathology services;
  • Design and deliver learning activities, support students, provide feedback, integrate research and professional practice, and engage in ongoing professional development;
  • Advance knowledge, create impact, supervise high-quality research, and contribute to collaborative and partnered research initiatives;
  • Engage with industry, government, and community, contribute to the discipline and higher education sector, and strengthen USC’s culture and capacity through leadership and collaboration; and
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, safe, and ethical work environment; undertake other duties relevant to evolving teaching, research, and professional responsibilities.

About you:

You are an effective and reflective clinical educator with strong expertise in medical laboratory science and evidence-based pedagogical practice, demonstrated through positive peer and student feedback and consistently strong learning outcomes. You adopt a student-centred approach to teaching, using contemporary and innovative instructional strategies to create an inclusive, engaging, and academically rigorous learning environment. You maintain active connections with professional bodies and community groups relevant to medical laboratory science, and collaborate with colleagues to foster a positive academic culture characterised by high engagement and achievement. Committed to continuous improvement, you participate in professional and academic development activities and are dedicated to enhancing your teaching practice, assessment design, and feedback in response to student needs and emerging trends in health education.

You will possess:

  • Completion or near-completion of a PhD qualification in a relevant field or equivalent accreditation and standing or a minimum of ten years clinical experience as Medical Laboratory Scientist in an accredited Australian pathology service;
  • Effectiveness as a teacher, which may be evidenced by:
    • student feedback on clinical teaching and student supervision placement in various forms: including simulated placement, telehealth placement, external and internal placements using valid instrument/s, peer review and/or student outcomes, and
    • the capacity to conceive, develop and deliver higher education curricula and contribute to relevant areas of teaching
  • Evidence of leadership of quality clinical education of undergraduate students in various forms: including simulated, telehealth, external and internal placements;
  • Membership of and sound connections with relevant professional bodies, community groups and/or in professional practice and evidence of leading development of new partnerships;
  • Strong personal qualities and collegial approaches that contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment which is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement for both staff and students and evidence of leading staff; and
  • Evidence of participation in academic development activities and the desire to continue to learn and improve as an effective academic.

Desirable

  • Experience undertaking academic administrative functions, e.g. course coordination, within a University.
  • Extensive network of links in the public and private sectors of medical laboratory science.
  • Experience of quality clinical education of undergraduate students in various forms: including simulated, telehealth, external and internal placements.
