The Sport and Exercise Science Discipline at UniSC is currently comprised of 15 academic staff and approximately 450 students. The Discipline has staff and students based at both the Sippy Downs Campus and the Moreton Bay Campus where new state of the art Exercise Science facilities have recently been opened. Students in the Discipline study the Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology, Bachelor of Sports and Exercise Science or the Bachelor of Sports Studies programs. The Clinical Exercise Physiology program and the Sports and Exercise Science program have current university course accreditation with ESSA. This Discipline also operates a Health and Fitness Clinic on campus offering students the opportunity to manage clients under supervision as part of their degree programs.

The Academic Staff in the Discipline have a variety of research interests ranging from physical activity, exercise, and health through to high performance sport. These applied research themes are underpinned by a strong focus on discipline-specific research programs in areas such as exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control, and nutrition.  The School of Health fosters multidisciplinary collaboration through a number of School Research Clusters, including in areas such as Healthy Ageing, Mental Health, Cancer and Elite Sport.  Research facilities include a dedicated gait laboratory as well as a recently refurbished exercise physiology suite comprising stress testing, ergometry and body composition laboratories.

Professor of Sport and Exercise Science and Discipline Lead

We're seeking an inspiring Professor to join our close-knit team of educators and lead the Sport and Exercise Science discipline within the School of Health. We're not after just any applicant – we want someone who's passionate about our community, dedicated to our students, and excited to shape the future.

As Discipline Lead, you'll guide and support our academic staff, nurturing learning, research, and engagement, all while aligning with our School's vision and the university's objectives.

You will:

  • initiate and cultivate research projects, collaborating with researchers from various backgrounds to enhance the overall quality of research outputs at the university;
  • contribute to strategic decision-making by providing the necessary guidance and expertise to foster a culture of excellence and innovation within the school;
  • assume a leadership role within the school and provide guidance and mentorship to academic staff and higher degree by research candidates;
  • develop your national and international research profile through collaboration, including securing competitive grant funding, mentoring others, and fostering a research culture; and
  • lead research projects and provide guidance and support to other researchers.

The successful appointee will be a dynamic and proficient academic, motivated by a commitment to research excellence and a passion for innovation within their field. Equipped with subject matter expertise and pedagogical finesse, you will effortlessly stimulate and captivate students, nurturing a lively and inclusive learning environment. Your authentic dedication to teaching shines through in your mentorship, sparking curiosity and leaving a meaningful imprint. Beyond the classroom, your exceptional talent for fostering collaborations and uniting researchers, highlights your capacity to pioneer innovative research, elevating and enhancing the standard of achievements. In essence, this forward-thinking academic will be well positioned to accelerate education and research efforts within the School, establishing you as a vital asset in shaping the trajectory of UniSC's future.

You will possess:

  • completion of a doctoral qualification in a relevant field and extensive experience as an academic leader;
  • experience of leadership at a School, Discipline or Program level;
  • involvement in the development of the Sport and Exercise Science professions at a national and international level, and evidence of having made a clear and formative impact in one or more of the Sport and Exercise Science sub-disciplines.
  • effectiveness as a teacher, which is evidenced by both exemplary teaching practice and leadership in teaching;
  • effective mentoring to develop the research capability of mid and early career researchers;
  • a clear and coherent research program with: a strong track record of active, sustained and productive engagement in high quality research, and quality research leadership;
  • strong leadership contributions and personal qualities that influence the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment which is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement for both staff and students; and
  • success in academic administrative functions.

Desirable

  • Experience in the management of course accreditation requirements for Sports and Exercise Science programs with ESSA.
  • Formal external and/or internal recognition for excellence in learning and teaching and/or research.
