The Opportunity

UniSC is looking for enthusiastic Student Mentors to join our Pasifika Student Mentor Program—an inspiring Widening Participation initiative that empowers Māori and Pasifika high school students to explore university pathways. Running from July to December, this paid mentoring role involves approximately 40 hours of workshop delivery and mentoring activities, giving you the chance to make a meaningful impact while building your own skills and experience.

You will

  • Complete all required mentoring training prior to program commencement;
  • Facilitate online and face-to-face campus workshops for groups of Pasifika high school students;
  • Develop and maintain culturally appropriate mentoring relationships with Pasifika students;
  • Share personal experiences of university life and educational journeys in an authentic and engaging manner;
  • Provide information about university pathways, programs, and support services;
  • Participate in program evaluation activities to help assess effectiveness and inform improvements;
  • Maintain regular communication with the program coordinator and other mentors; and
  • Complete all administrative requirements, including timesheets, attendance records, and feedback forms.

About you

You're a confident and engaging communicator with strong interpersonal skills, especially when connecting with high school students. You’re able to share your educational journey in a way that’s both relatable and inspiring, creating a meaningful connection with those you mentor. Reliable, punctual, and full of positive energy, you approach every session with genuine enthusiasm and a commitment to supporting and uplifting others.

You will possess:

  • Current enrolment in a UniSC degree;
  • Pasifika cultural background or demonstrated understanding of and connection to Pasifika communities;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in engaging with high school students;
  • Ability to share personal educational experiences in an inspiring and relatable way;
  • Demonstrated reliability and punctuality with a positive approach to engage with the program; and
  • Current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) or ability to obtain one before program commencement.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in mentoring, tutoring, or workshop facilitation.
  • Understanding of challenges faced by Pasifika students in pursuing higher education.
  • Understanding of university support services.
  • Experience in public speaking or group facilitation.
  • Leadership experience in university, community, or cultural contexts.
