The Opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated educator excited about shaping the minds of undergraduate mathematics students across all levels. This role involves teaching and advancing research interests in mathematics. You'll establish valuable connections with academics and researchers at UniSC, nationally, and internationally, as well as with industry partners. UniSC boasts strengths in pure mathematics (Algebra), mathematical modeling & simulation, biostatistics, and machine learning. You will:

  • contribute to learning and teaching practices within the mathematics discipline;
  • undertake high-impact research;
  • supervise honours students and HDR candidates; 
  • play a part in successful research grant applications; and 
  • contribute to governance, coordination of and participation in the school capacity-building activities, and activities that contribute to the student experience.

About you:

Our ideal candidate will possess expertise in mathematics, strong pedagogical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a genuine enthusiasm for teaching and learning. They will prioritise students' needs, employ innovative teaching methods, and demonstrate a commitment to creating an engaging learning environment. This entails a grasp of pedagogical principles and instructional strategies, utilising effective teaching techniques to improve student outcomes. You will cultivate a supportive learning atmosphere, maintain discipline, and promote a positive learning environment. Additionally, you will have experience in assessment and feedback, designing fair evaluations to gauge student progress and identify areas for development. Adaptability and flexibility are crucial, as you will tailor your approach to accommodate diverse learning needs and changing educational trends based on student feedback. Finally, a dedication to continuous professional development is essential, actively seeking opportunities for growth, attending workshops, conferences, and engaging in research to remain current in the field.

You will possess:

  • completion of a doctoral qualification in a relevant field or equivalent accreditation and standing;
  • proven track record as an effective teacher in undergraduate courses (subjects). In addition to active face-to-face (classroom) and online teaching, this includes tasks such as taking an active role in course design, assessment design, development of learning materials, course coordination, and managing or working within a team of course staff (E.g. tutors) and mathematics teaching colleagues. Experience with teaching into first-year courses would be viewed particularly favourably but is not specifically required.
  • membership and sound connections with relevant professional bodies and community groups;
  • sound and established track record of research activity commensurate with the level of the position; and
  • evidence of participation in academic development activities and the desire to continue to learn and improve as an effective academic.

Desirable

  • experience undertaking academic administrative functions, e.g. course coordination, within a University.
